April 24: Whatcom County’s Fourth Annual Denim Day In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. The Justices stated that since removing jeans “…is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might,” the victim must have assisted the attacker in removing her jeans, which they felt implied consent. Denim Day began as a heated response to this verdict, but is now a day to raise awareness about sexual violence. Businesses and community members are encouraged to bring attention to the issue by taking part in Whatcom County’s Fourth Annual Denim Day by wearing jeans. For more information, contact DVSAS at (360) 671-5714 or visit www.dvsas.org/denimday.

Pres cred

This year marks the FIRST Presidential Proclamation in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month! The National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV), along with Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) and the National Center for Victims of Crime, worked extremely hard over the past several months with the White House as well as the Vice President’s Office to make this happen. In addition, it’s important to note that the Office of Violence Against Women was extremely supportive of this endeavor as well. View the Presidential Proclamation at http://www.nsvrc.org/news/current-events/1371.

Governor puts pen to paper

In honor of survivors of sexual assault, the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs and Office of Crime Victims Advocacy journeyed to the capitol building in Olympia to watch Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire put her pen to the paper to sign the SAAM proclamation.

Remember the grade school field trips to tour the capitol? Yes, the restroom lines were long that day…

The 2009 campaign for Sexual Assault Awareness Month builds upon and reinforces last year’s theme. This year, we have added the slogan Respect Works! This slogan highlights the role that respectful behavior, at both the individual and organizational levels, can play in creating and maintaining safe and healthy communities and workplaces.

Walking the walk in Pierce County

walkamile

Sexual Assault Center of Pierce County is hosting a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Friday, April 24th. Register early and don’t forget the shoes.

From the brochure:

Can men walking in red patent leather pumps or gold lame heels offer any kind of proimise for a safer world? Can their groans of pain be a rallying cry for other men to understand that men can stop rape? You better believe it!

But we understand… it’s not just wearing the shoes. Where will you find 14 wide kitten heels? Try a local used clothing or shoe store. Also online shops like www.zappos.com and www.designershoes.com carry women’s shoes in larger sizes that fit men.

If there’s no way you’ll finish a mile in heels, go ahead, be creative… wear a pink bandana, a flamboyant hat, a feathered boa or one of our event t-shirts! Bring a handmade sign. Heels or not, your participation is important.
